The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lagoon in all of Europe. The extended piece of land that separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean is known as the La Manga strip; the word manga means sleeve in Spanish. If you look on a map you will see that this strip of land does indeed resemble a shirt sleeve. The water in the Mar Menor remains some five degrees warmer year around than the Mediterranean: it also has a shallow gradient of shoreline into the sea making it a safe place for the children to swim. Back to the map and you can see how the shoreline curves around to the port city of Cartagena with all its navel history.

While in the area and looking for some amazing beaches try the town of Aguilas: you will be more than satisfied. If you are here in the summer bring lots of sun cream as the temperatures quite often reach 40 degrees Celsius. If sunbathing is not your thing then come to the area in the winter months that are short and mild.
